The following are answers to Questions we are Frequently Asked. Or questions we are asked at least once. Or questions we make up.
Q: Where's the new comic? It should have updated by now!
A: Be patient, young padawan. If you are checking at exactly midnight, the new comic isn't up because it takes some time for ComicGenesis to update all of its comics (aka things are blocking the tubes). Come back in awhile. If, however, it is well past midnight, you should be in bed. If you were at the website in the last 12 hours, ComicGenesis will not update your cache in order to save bandwidth. Try clearing your cache and hitting refresh. If that doesn't work, technology hates you.
Q: I don't get it.
A: That's not a question. Try again.
Q: I don't get it?
A: I---That still doesn't help us. What don't you get?
Q: I don't understand the plot.
A: Still not a question, but at least we're getting somewhere. Have you read the whole comic? If no, do so. If you have, and you are still in the dark, make sure you have read the extra information found on the Campaign page and the Characters page--it may help. If it doesn't, keep reading on a regular basis, and hopefully things will become clear. The prologue tries to pack in a lot of information, and could be confusing at first, but as things develop, everything should begin to make sense. If it still doesn't, well, we can't help you.
Q: I don't understand <insert gaming reference here>.
A: You just don't get this question thing, do you? Sigh. Damp With Murder is based on the Dungeons and Dragons fantasy roleplaying game, and it would appear that the characters have some grasp of the rules in which they operate. Thus, these things you don't understand are references to that game. Our goal is that the plot and some of the jokes will be accessible to a wider range of readers than gamers (after all, Lucas's mom doesn't get it either), but Dw/M is primarily a gaming comic. If you wish to understand the references, play the game!
Q: I read on your Campaign page that this is based on a D&D campaign set in a specific setting under the copyright of Wizards of the Coast. Does this not make your comic a blatant copyright infringement?
A: We certainly hope not. First of all, Damp With Murder is meant as a work of parody and so should fall under fair use. In addition, to avoid Eberron copyright problems, we have changed all of the proper names. Also, we are making no money from this comic, so we're hoping that it shouldn't be a problem for Wizards of the Coast. We have been trying to investigate the possibility of legitimizing the comic, but so far, our emails to the D&D and Eberron licensing people have gone unanswered. :( If any Wizards of the Coast people are reading this, especially the Eberron guys (whom we love) we hope they will take it not as stealing copyrights but as a work of humour and homage to their wonderful creation. If they have a problem with it, please email us at dampwithmurder@gmail.com.
Q: So, having read your Campaign page, I see that this comic is based on an actual D&D campaign. How much of what happens in the comic actually took place in the campaign?
A: This is one of the questions we have actually been asked. Once. Most of what takes place is based on what happened in the game, including many of the jokes. However, for the sake of making it understandable and having at least a modicum of humour each day, many comics are only loosely based on what took place in session. It should be noted that each session is rather humourous, if only out-of-character, so we have much material to go on. Allison would like to note that session is more entertaining than a pub full of drunk writers playing shuffleboard. Which, admittedly, is pretty entertaining.
Q: What are Dw/M Points?
A: Dw/M Points are things we give out to readers for understanding obscure references and other pointless stuff like that. They are absolutely valueless, but we keep track of them anyway. To get a Dw/M Point, you must email us at dampwithmurder@gmail.com, say which comic the email is responding to (it must be one whose commentary says a Dw/M Point is available) and explain the reference.
Q: I can't tell the difference between Character X and Character Y.
A: ...Have you looked at the comic? Assuming you have, if you look closely (or not so closely) you will note that each character has very distinguishing features. For example, Soralbain has a pipe. Chassis is a robot. For a less obvious example, Jordan's hair is very short, while Eveliandre's--while the same colour--is nonetheless somewhat longer. Also, Evenliandre is tiny, and has no nose. Lisand has suspenders. Always. Ava is a girl. Always. Julian/Tor/Thane is--well, he often looks different, being a changeling, but you can usually pick him out because he will be the most carefully drawn character of them all, since Allison is obsessive about her own characters. If you are still having problems, please review the Characters page, where you will find detailed pictures of each character for your reference.
Upon review, it appears we should have titled this page "Frequently Asked Statements." Of course, we made most of these up, so I suppose it's our fault.
